St Paul's Catholic Primary School Newsletter 2023 Term 1, Week 6
Principal's Message
St Paul’s families
As I write today it is exciting to think that we are past the midpoint in Term 1 for this year. Our classes have been busy with routine setting and class expectations; learning programs are in full swing and the Swimming lessons program has been a huge success.
Our Year 3-6 students and teachers look forward to the upcoming Swimming Carnival on Friday March 17th at the Parap Swimming Pool. This will be an opportunity for our Year 6 House Leaders to show leadership and encourage school spirit. Parents and families are encouraged to join us at this event. With the Overall House Team Award and the Spirit Cup ( awarded to the house that demonstrates the most enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and support throughout the carnival) up for grabs, it will be a great day. The T-2 classes will remain at school on this day following their regular learning programs.
A HUGE thankyou is to be extended to our Parents & Friends committee who work tirelessly to fundraise at events to assist in the purchase of items which benefit the students in our classes. The new playground which was constructed last year was partially funded by the P&F by their generous $25,000 donation. Everyone is encouraged to support the P&F events in any way they can. It is our students, and your children who are receiving the rewards for the hard work. Nominations are currently being called for to be part of this committee - please reach out if you can to be part of this group.
A thankyou is extended to Ms Pip who sadly left our school at the end of Week 5 to take up an Outdoor Education role interstate. Ms PIp started with our school in 2022 and her contributions to our school community, particularly in the area of physical education, will be greatly missed.
A key initiative for 2023 is the introduction and adoption of the Zones of Regulation framework. Our school previously aligned our emotional check in system with The 5 Point Scale. Our school’s transition to Zones of regulation is primarily to keep in line with CENT & private clinicians who students may work with, and as such avoid confusion.
Zones of regulation is a framework designed to help individuals, particularly children, learn to recognize and regulate their own emotions and behaviors. There are several reasons why we use the zones of regulation framework:
Self-awareness: By understanding and identifying their own emotional state, individuals can become more self-aware and better equipped to manage their emotions.
Self-regulation: The zones of regulation provide a common language and visual representation of different emotional states, making it easier for individuals to identify strategies to regulate their own emotions.
Social skills: By understanding and regulating their emotions, individuals are better equipped to interact with others in positive and constructive ways.
Learning: Individuals who are able to regulate their emotions are better able to focus and engage in learning, leading to improved academic and personal outcomes.
Overall, the zones of regulation framework can be a valuable tool for individuals of all ages to better understand and manage their emotions, leading to improved social, emotional, and academic outcomes.
We invite you to attend our first Parent Engagement Forum for the year on Wednesday March 15th at 5pm in the staffroom. This will be a prime opportunity to listen to members of our team and the CENT Learning team who will explain this model further. This event will be further advertised on Class Dojo.
Have a blessed week ahead.

We need your support!
While we understand that Pokémon cards can be a source of entertainment and enjoyment for many children, we have observed some negative impacts on the school environment, including distraction, disruption, and conflict among students. These impacts can negatively affect the learning experience for all students.
We ask for your support in not allowing your children to bring Pokémon cards to school .
We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to create a positive and productive learning environment for all of our students. Please contact the school if you have any questions or concerns.
Catholic Care School Counselling Program
Hi, my name is Sarah and I am the School Counsellor from CatholicCare NT. I am located at St Paul’s Catholic Primary School one day a week on Thursdays and I'm here to provide students with support and emotional well-being. Through the School Counselling Program during a counselling session I conduct a child centred approach with modalities that are developmentally appropriate, evidenced based, therapeutic intervention for school aged children from 3-12 years old.
Here are some of the following referral reasons that your child may be struggling with or having worries and may be seeking additional and non-judgemental support. School counselling referrals can provide students and parents/ guardians/ carers with another safe place to explore their immediate needs/ concerns.
Some examples of when families can refer to the School Counselling Program can be; divorce & separation of parents, anxiety & depression, low self esteem & self confidence, social difficulties, angry & aggressive behaviour, trauma & abuse, grief & loss, autism spectrum disorder, attachment issues… and more…
